Tour Plan
Rise early for breakfast then you will be picked up for the trip to the Materuni village. Once you reach the village you will start your coffee tour at a traditional Chagga’shamba’ (farm). Here your guide will explain all aspects of the Chagga homestead including the other crops that they grow aside from coffee. You will get to see how the coffee is produced- from picking the bean to roasting and then drinking a delicious cup yourself. Following your coffee tour you will then take a short hike (make sure to wear some good shoes as it can be muddy up there), passing through local villages to reach the waterfalls. Here you will either have a picnic lunch box or arrive to a full spread of freshly cooked lunch prepared by your own safari chef. Following lunch you will have the opportunity to take a dip in the refreshing (quite cold!) pools beneath the waterfalls. Sleep over at the local house in the Materuni village.
Wake up early for breakfast then head to the hotsprings. The hot springs are a hidden little tropical oasis found approximately 1 hour drive from Moshi. The journey there alone is interesting- driving through Maasai land, past bomas and young warriors herding cattle. You will find yourself wondering how on earth you could find this lush place in such a dry land, scattered with Baobab trees and acacias… and then you will come upon this tropical little paradise full of palms and crystal clear waters. The warm (not necessarily hot!) and fresh waters are great for a relaxing swim and you can picnic under the trees with hot lunch from the locals, sometimes along with a group of vervet monkeys. Spend as long or as little as you would like here taking in great views of both Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro and alternatively you can camp overnight! See the pare people on Mondays it’s their market day. Sleep over at the hot springs.
After breakfast you will depart and head to Makuyuni Market in Arusha. Happens Sunday and Monday. Here you will admire the market and its contents. For instance you will get to see the maasai blankets of different colours. You will then visit maasai boma and see their daily life. You will be able to meet the Maasai warriors and ladies. You will also take a tour around mto wa mbu at the red banana plantation and rice plantantion. You will then head to Lake Eyasi safari lodge for dinner and overnight.
Following an early breakfast at the campsite you will take a walk through the scattered bush to the Bushmen’s home, accompanied by your guide and a local guide that is able to translate the language of the Hadzabe tribe, which the bushmen belong to. The Hadzabe bushmen live in groups divided into approximately 10 families and they are very welcoming to visitors. You will be able to experience their typical bush life including their unique style of hunting for a variety of game meat as well as rodents, insects, roots and leaves. They sleep in caves, without fear of the wild animals that may pass by the in the night. This afternoon you can meet the Datoga tribe, famous for being the ‘blacksmiths of Tanzania’. Later afternoon your guide can talk you for a walking safari around the edge of the lake, spotting out for some of the beautiful birdlife for which Lake Eyasi is famous. You will then head back to Moshi.
