🌿 WHY CLIMB MOUNT MERU?

Mount Meru offers a unique combination of mountain trekking and wildlife experience. The lower section passes through Arusha National Park, where you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys and other wildlife. An armed park ranger accompanies the trek because of the wildlife in the park.

As you gain altitude, the landscape changes from forest to giant heather and moorland before reaching the spectacular crater rim and the summit of Socialist Peak.

🗓️ 4-DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARUSHA – MOMELLA GATE – MIRIAKAMBA HUT

After breakfast, we drive from Arusha to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park.

After registration and meeting the mountain crew and ranger, we begin hiking through open grassland and montane forest. Wildlife sightings are possible along the way.

We continue through the forest towards Miriakamba Hut, located at approximately 2,500 m.

DAY 2: MIRIAKAMBA HUT – SADDLE HUT

After breakfast, we continue climbing through the forest and giant-heather zone towards Saddle Hut, at approximately 3,570 m.

After arriving at Saddle Hut and having lunch, there is an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru, approximately 3,820 m.

The afternoon provides excellent views of Mount Meru’s crater and, when conditions are clear, Mount Kilimanjaro.

DAY 3: SADDLE HUT – SOCIALIST PEAK – MIRIAKAMBA HUT

This is the summit day.

We wake around midnight and begin the climb under headlamps. The route takes us towards Rhino Point and Cobra Point, followed by the spectacular crater-rim section.

The final approach to Socialist Peak – 4,566 m is steep and exposed in places, requiring careful footing and a steady pace.

We aim to reach the summit around sunrise.

🌅 Enjoy spectacular views across Mount Meru’s crater and, on clear mornings, views towards Mount Kilimanjaro.

After spending time at the summit, we descend to Saddle Hut for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut.

DAY 4: MIRIAKAMBA HUT – MOMELLA GATE – ARUSHA

After breakfast, we begin our final descent through the forest and lower slopes of Mount Meru.

There may be further opportunities to see wildlife and birds as we approach the park’s lower elevations.

We arrive at Momella Gate, complete the formalities and meet our vehicle for the transfer back to Arusha.

🎒 WHO CAN JOIN?

This trek is suitable for reasonably fit hikers who are comfortable walking for several hours on consecutive days.

Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not essential. However, the summit day is long and demanding, and the final ridge to Socialist Peak includes steep and exposed sections.

🏔️ WHY CHOOSE THE 4-DAY TREK?

The 4-day itinerary gives you more time to acclimatize compared with the shorter Mount Meru itinerary. It also includes an optional Little Meru acclimatization hike before the summit attempt.

It is particularly attractive for hikers planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro after Mount Meru.
