Tour Plan
Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Natron
- Morning: You will have an early morning departure from Nairobi, heading south towards the Namanga border crossing into Tanzania.
- Afternoon: After completing immigration formalities, you will continue your scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley towards Lake Natron. Expect to see stunning landscapes and Maasai villages.
- Evening: Arrive at a campsite or lodge near Lake Natron, such as Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge, where you will have dinner and rest before the midnight ascent.
- Midnight: Begin your climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai. Starting at night avoids the scorching sun and allows you to reach the top for sunrise. The hike is very steep and can take 6–8 hours.
- Morning: Watch the sunrise from the crater rim and take in panoramic views of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and even Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day. You will then make the difficult descent back to base camp.
- Afternoon: After a rest and a meal, you will visit Lake Natron to see the vast salt flats and large flocks of lesser flamingos. Some tours also include a visit to the Engaresero waterfalls.
- Morning: After breakfast, begin the long journey back to Nairobi, stopping for lunch along the way.
- Afternoon: Cross back into Kenya at the Namanga border and continue the drive to Nairobi, where your trip ends.
Important considerations.
- Difficulty: The hike is very challenging due to the steep, loose terrain and the heat during the descent. It is only suitable for experienced and fit hikers.
- Active Volcano: Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano and tours are subject to closures in the event of an eruption.
- Cost: While costs vary, expect a price range of $500–$1,000 per person, depending on the operator and type of accommodation.
- Visa: Since the trek is in Tanzania, a Tanzanian visa is required for non-citizens of the East African Community.
