Overview

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest mountain, after Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Erosion and time have reduced the peak from 6500m to 5199 on the highest point today. This extinct volcano, dating back 2.5 million years old, is located about 200 kilometers north of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, in the Mount Kenya National Park.

Mount Kenya has three peaks on the summit area: batian, Nelion and point Lenana. On this trip we will climb up to Lenana (4985m), which offers magnificent views..

This wonderful and scenic hike takes you to discover the unique landscapes of this region in Kenya. The best time to climb Mount Kenya is during the dry months of January, February, late August, September and October.

Tour Plan

Depart from Nairobi at 0600hrs, driving through agricultural country up to Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, we take 4×4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest where we start our trekking through the dense bamboo forest for a distance of 10 km to the Mt Kenya Bandas. 3hrs / 10km walk / 650m ascent
After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace . A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni and the Giants Billiards Table, whilst if we follow the river near road head, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch on the banks of a stream, then it’s time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.
This day offers a wonderful range of vision. Today you start the hike of the steep slope towards Lake Michaelson. With water rests on the way the trek is one to remember. The highlight of the days trek is the walk from the cliff down to the Lake Michaelson in slow and calculated steps. Arrival time is just in time for hot lunch. Lake Michaelson has arguably the most scenic views on the mountain with Vivien falls and the Nithi gorges. Overnight at Lake Michaelson Camp
At 2:30 am you are woken up by the camp crew and have some tea and biscuits. Start the attempt of the scree and rock to the summit, Point Lenana 4,985 m , which is the highlight of our trip! After taking photos of the African sunrise and on a clear day views of Kilimanjaro, you descend slowly down to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast. After some rest embark on the journey to Old Moses camp through Mackinder’s valley arriving late in the evening. Lunch is served on the way. The camp is relatively warm and here you enjoy the view of Nanyuki town and the Timau plains. Dinner and overnight
After early morning breakfast, descend for 3 hours down to the Sirimon Park gate to catch a vehicle for transfer to Nairobi or your next destination. At the park entrance gate you have the opportunity to bid goodbye to the crew as you appreciate them depending on their services rendered.
